When you need to cool down after too much comedy or too much drama or too hot a beer tent, there’s always Modern Dance. The space is always well air conditioned, the music soft and new age, and lithe people will do interesting things that don’t require a knowledge of current event or pop culture. KIN is a great example; these dancers arrive to a pipe of PVC pipes and a bowl full of card we all filled out; they asked us “what does family mean to you?” Motions begins, its generally silent and the first business to assemble the pipes in to a giant cube. The cube is a prop, the dance in and around and with it, it’s mute but symbolic. Near the middle of the show, Mr. Gonzales reads a poem about the meaning of family, then the dance resumes. In one clever scenes a dancer runs across the back wall; its move I’ve never seen before. As the program wraps up, yarn appears under certain seats and is tied to Mr. Cube. The dancers read our definitions of family, and poof! It’s over. Back to the real world. Maybe even back to our families.
