The days are getting shorter and hints of a chill are in the air (in places other than Florida, of course). What better time to release a luxurious coffee table book on pioneering goth/new wave/post-punk band Bauhaus by drummer Kevin Haskins?
Apparently Haskins is a bit of a packrat, as the book is filled with just about anything you could imagine related to the groundbreaking band – pins, news clippings, flyers, comic strips, set lists, laminates, record covers, and backstage photos (including a photo of the band playing soccer which probably would have blown contemporary American minds. You mean they don’t sleep in coffins and only come out at night?). A crisp, clean layout emphasizes the beauty of the objects – whether double page spreads of buttons or flyers laid out on red background, the result is a striking array of rock ephemera. Stories about the band’s reunion or meetings with heroes David Bowie and Iggy Pop share space with personal photographs and drawings. The minimalist design keeps the collection from getting overwhelming, and the book is a true work of art.
While it’s a bit pricey, anyone interested in the band should seek this out, as it will make the perfect coffee table for those times when your flesh creeps and never comes back.
