Savoy Motel

What’s Your Rupture?

The official press release from Nashville’s turbo-charged boy-girl combo, Savoy Motel, sums up the band’s debut offering nicely – a unique hybrid of glam rock, boogie, soul, power-pop, garage, punk, dance music. It’s also A LOT of fun. And although the record’s experiential-sounding fun-factor prompted me to push re-play numerous times, what really zapped me was the friendly and familiar-sounding quality of the songs.

A groovy, gritty morsel possessing an authentic Dr. John-style flavor, opening track “Souvenir Rock Shop” provides the perfect set up for this gloriously lo-fi set.

While “Sorry People” serves as a lighthearted ’90s era Jimmy Ray-meets-Len feel-good, “Mindless Blues” smacks of late ’80s Prince-inspired stankiness. But it’s the riff-driven “Western Boogie” that truly captured my old school senses – Please to meet you. Won’t you guess my name. ‘Nuff said.

Yet despite the smooth groovin’ charm of “Everyone Wants to Win” and the schizophrenic, psychedelic garage jam allure of “International Language,” it’s the snappy and playful “Hot One” that burns brightest of the eight-song collection.
