Citizen

with Sorority Noise, Great Grandpa

The Social; Orlando, FL • November 2, 2017

The As You Please tour opened with Seattle “Snack Rock” band, Great Grandpa. They were one of the most interesting bands I’ve ever heard, with vocalist Alex Menne’s extremely different vocal style, and their math rock instrumental vibes. When she would scream, it wasn’t the normal screaming style most vocalists do. It was the legitimate “about to be murdered” type of screams. They definitely deserve more recognition.

Sorority Noise struck the crowd with “Noisey,” off their 2015 release Joy, Departed. The whole room was yelling along to the decently sad lyrics. There was a constant mosh pit, even to the saddest songs. I had never heard a crowd yell that loud, until Citizen came on.

Once the lights turned off, the beginning of “Jet” off Citizen’s latest release started to play. I swore I could hear the screams from a mile away. At this point, it was very obvious the show was sold out. The Social was packed to the brim with Citizen fans. I could barely hear Mat Kerekes’ vocals over the crowd. Although there were some technical difficulties in the beginning, Citizen pulled through and blew the roof off the venue. Playing a wide variety of new and old songs, all the people in the crowd found common ground with the sad lyrics almost every Citizen song consists of.

As people swayed, moshed, and screamed every lyric to every song, the night soon drew to a close. Everyone in that crowd left dripping in sweat and with lost voices. ◼
