Rock bands come, and rock bands go. And occasionally one hits us hard before disappearing leaving us to pine for their missing star. For director Lee Aronsohn, his musical memory came from the group Magic Music. They used to jam on the quad at U Colorado (Boulder). Everyone loved them; they even opened for Cat Stevens and totally showed him up which was a bad idea. Magic Music had multiple opportunities to sign with a major label, yet it always fell through. Either the boys were too hickish, or they couldn’t agree on terms, or the label wanted then to add a drummer. The boys decayed into the leaf mold of old hippie bands. Some members went on to well-deserved obscurity, or they got into drugs or booze or bankruptcy. Some even started other equally fameless projects, and they became a small print footnote to music history.

Enter Mr. Aronsohn (Murphy Brown, Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men). Through superhuman efforts documented here, he locates all the old members, talks all of them into his personal dream, and they go on to play on magical night of reminisce in Boulder. So, you CAN go back, and enough years and tears have passed to bring these guys back together. As one of the boys points out: once you hit 70 it’s hard to create friendships that go back 50 years. Magic Music is the shining star of washed-up band docs, and while Aronsohn sometimes comes across as a Marty DiBergi type, the project captures both the moments of the 1970’s campus party scene, and the joys of re-discovering the music from our memories. Best of all, these guys are excellent musicians who groove well together. They just have no business sense, and they still don’t seem to really care.
