Who Shot John?

Vizztone Label Group

“Honest” and “pure” are two words that can perhaps best describe the newly-released solo record from Spin Doctors guitarist, Eric Schenkman. Although the acclaimed musician is best known for his previous pop / rock songwriting and guitar work with the chart-busting combo, Who Shot John? showcases Schenkman’s personal penchant for the blues. “It’s about my life – where I’m at now,” he commented recently regarding the ten-song set.

Bursting with down and dirty blues authenticity, “I’m Alright” is a crisp-sounding kick-off and one of the record’s most convincing cuts. While “Locked in the House,” “No Pain” and the title track are appealing reflections of Schenkman’s rock roots, Who Shot John? beams brightest from the grooves of its more blues-driven tunes, as the soulful “Lincoln’s Feat,” the soaring “Sign of the Times” and the gritty, hard-edged “Far Away” all are mighty highlights. However, with its heart-stopping, electric urgency, “Agent Orange” arguably is the best of the batch.

In sum, with Who Shot John?, Eric Schenkman delivers a taste-tempting treat for modern-day blues rock aficionados.
