Luna Honey
Bound
Luna Honey take listeners on a wild ride on their latest album, Bound. Their sonic journey begins in a Cenobite infested industrial hell and winds its way through various levels of purgatory before winding up someplace at least apparently peaceful. This is the Philadelphia-based band’s fifth independently curated album. Working outside the label system gives the members of Luna Honey the freedom to experiment and make bold choices.
“Vacuum Cleaner” takes us to a brutal realm. An ominous bass and a howling guitar combine with an industrial thud to create a creepy mood. Over this foreboding thrum, Maura Pond sings in desperate operatic voice. It’s a song that demands attention.
“Barbie Cake” follows with a mechanical funk feel and Pond sounding like Diamanda Galas invoking demons. As we progress through the album, the instrumentation gradually becomes less threatening, and Pond’s voice takes on mellower timbers. “Lemons” features a hypnotic bass that draws you toward tranquility. By the time we reach “Hriddel” we’re floating on rippling waves of sound, and Maura has calmed to a near lullaby whisper.
