Ginetta’s Vendetta

Ginetta’s Vendetta

Fun Size

Kickin’ Wiccan Music

I think Ginetta’s Vendetta would be a fun band to see. Ginetta looks like a spunky gal on the CD cover clutching her pocket trumpet. Although the name suggests some sort of Metal band, they are actually a very conservative jazz band and UNESCO Jazz Ambassadors. That means Ginetta and her band travel the world bringing jazz to places like Uzbekistan. They remind me of University jazz bands who focus on playing the repertoire and not creating anything too challenging.

Fun size features two original compositions by Ginetta: “Blues for Pop-Pop” and “Tell Your Story Walkin’.” Both are pleasant tunes. I like the interplay between Ginetta on her pocket trumpet and sax man Danny Walsh, particularly on their version of “All Blues.” I’m not so fond of Ginetta’s vocals. She has a nice enough voice, but the slip and slide delivery leaves me cold.

I can see Ginetta’s Vendetta playing sets at schools and community centers to spread the gospel of jazz around the world. I’d like to hear them being more adventurous, but that doesn’t seem to be in their portfolio. Oh well, there is a place in the world for groups that play it safe and keep the standards alive.
