I’m really starting to dig this Six Degrees label and its flavor of global electronica. This time around, we have DJ Science guesting Hindu and Muslim musicians along with appearances by Bill Laswell, Kevin Carnes and a handful of others. The result is the transformation of traditional ragas into a more rhythmic flow. Unlike Banghra and other recent imports, this treats the sounds with reverence, adding modern touches as part of the process rather than idly borrowing sonic pieces of other lands. The tides of cosmic forces swirl around you as the moods shift from song to song. The album closes with the eerily lo-tech “Durga Puja,” a fascinating and unsettling note.
