The Lilac Time

Looking For a Day in the Night

Spin Art

For those of you who think there is no good English pop music anymore, buy this disk. The Lilac Time makes music that is gorgeous. Gorgeous! The music is mostly Stephen Duffy playing an acoustic guitar with minimal accompaniment. On first listen, the music reminded me of a happy, well-adjusted Red House Painters album. It is achingly beautiful and evocative of some Eighties bands. However, I cannot think of any band that they sound exactly like. (A good thing). The first two songs alone should capture your attention. The opening track, “Salvation Song,” is a three-minute slice of heaven. It doesn’t end there. The remaining of the album contains a host of fine songs, well written, that are beautiful without being derivative of anyone else. As this is the US release, it contains five additional bonus tracks. Spring is upon us, the weather is beautiful, take your partner to the park. While you’re at it, listen to this album, have a glass of wine and fall in love with each other. I heard this is their first album in eight years. I hope it doesn’t take that long for their next one.
