Animatronics

2000: The Year of the Future

Morphius

Having spent too much time listening to Bowie, Gary Numan, and Devo, this release finds Animatronics heavily in debt to those influences with little chance to allow their own skills to flourish. The lyrics cover similar material as the aforementioned artists, such as bad technology, Orwellian thought control, and space travel. Not bad stuff in a climate that rewards vitriolic, misogynist lyrics. Unfortunately, the musicianship is unable to supply the necessary atmosphere to carry the burden and the overall music suffers. While the tracks are fairly interesting, there is little of real substance to warrant repeated listenings. I do think this is a band that will achieve their own unique sound and style as they progress.
