Italian opera singers aren’t exactly on notebooks and backpacks, but that doesn’t mean they can’t incorporate pop into their usual routine. Alessandro Safina, born in Italy in 1968, was completely immersed in opera by the age of nine and didn’t think twice about it until he was about seventeen. Soon groups like Genesis, The Clash, and U2 (his favorite) found their way into his heart and made him think more about closing the gap between his two favorite styles. His first album, a self-titled partly English modern opera masterpiece has scored him a live telecast concert (airing on PBS in December) for the Great Performances series. To hold the heart of opera and smear on contemporary world sounds, modern themes and classic translations makes this debut extremely different. The first single “Only You (Luna)” is a wonderful example of mixing talents of good looking, red blooded Italian Safina and the rest of the album is just as satisfying.
