The Squirrel Nut Zippers of R&B, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings camel-walk us back in time when soul music was all about the “funky-good time.” This is definitely your parents’ R&B, reminiscent of early James Brown and the entire Stax catalog (especially the Isaac Hayes-inspired Sam & Dave). The Dap-Kings are tight with a horn section that snaps and pops off the disc. And Ms. Jones simply wails – like some of James’s funkiest divas (Lyn Collins, Marva Whitney, and the like). Though stuck in the mid-‘60s, Dap Dappin’ is some of the most fun you can have today without getting arrested. It has a really good-time spirit missing in a lot of today’s R&B. You sweat just listening to it. And their cover of Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately” is sheer brilliance. This is definitely for folks who miss the glide in their stride and the pimp in their strut.
