Boxcar Racer is two guys from Blink-182. That’s really all I need to write about this record.
If it were packaged under the Blink title and has some goofy photo on it, it wouldn’t make any difference. It is unfortunate, though, that guitarist and principal songwriter, Tom Delonge, has gone on record saying these songs are supposed to be more “mature.” Lyrically, this may be true. Musically, though, the songwriting is not of any different caliber than, as previously said, a normal Blink-182 record.
The album begins with the misplaced piano intro of MTV staple “I Feel So,” and goes downhill from there. “Tiny Voices,” the band’s next single, has a second-rate Pearl Jam riff – but only for about five seconds.
“My First Punk Song” does prove that you only need a guitar and amp, and no real talent, to play punk. And I love punk rock!
I will say this: I’ve missed Tim Armstrong. I don’t know where he’s been. Admittedly, I haven’t been looking for him, but I’ve missed him nonetheless. Armstrong’s unique, deep-throated singing on “Cat Like Thief” is fantastic. I just wished the annoying high-pitch of Tom Delounge had stayed out of it. He ruined a perfectly acceptable song.
