Mr. Lif

I Phantom

Definitive Jux

It’s the Return of the Boom Bap. Boston MC, Mr. Lif, brings hip-hop the way it’s supposed to be: rough, rugged, and raw. No inane flows over flowery beats here – I Phantom is one of those albums that makes you realize why you love hip-hop in the first place. This B-Boy gives us lyrics with meaning (and sometimes downright personal, like in “Success” and “Daddy’s Dearest”) that transcend battle prattle and unpaid Versace advertising over back-breaking beats. This debut disc is like manna from heaven for all the hip-hop heads starving in the desert of black radio.
