Gaby Kerpel, the Argentinean composer who crafted the music for the long running theatre/acrobatic performance troupe De La Guarda, has released his first solo performance. Building on his work with De La Guarda, Kerpel continues to follow his own singular vision with this release that mixes traditional Argentinean folk melodies, children’s voices and electronic manipulation. The music retains much of the theatrical elements Kerpel perfected as musical director of De La Guarda, with skittering rhythms starting then stopping and the strange rhythmic flourishes that continuously change throughout the tracks. While much of the nuance and charm of these tracks takes several listens before it unfolds, one certainly has to marvel at the craftsmanship that Kerpel applies to this recording. The only drawback is his resolve to use children’s voices throughout many of these cuts. While it may be interesting at first, after awhile, I start hitting skip on many of the songs.
