The Sound of the Crowd

All Things (Just Keep Getting Better)?

Ok, here’s a lesson in something. In what, I have no idea. But the Washington Post, MSNBC and ABCNEWS.com each have stories about a couple of recent polls on the issue of civil unions and/or marriage for gays & lesbians.

The Post headline: Poll Finds Growing Support for Gay Civil Unions

MSNBC: Same-sex marriage debate increases support for such recognition

ABCNEWS.com: Voters Side With Bush in Same-Sex Marriage

Who’s right? Well near as I can tell, they all are. The polls do suggest growing support for civil unions, and that the same-sex marriage debate is making a lot of people deal with their shit, if I may be permitted a colorful metaphor. But it’s also true that most voters do oppose same-sex marriage, while at the same time not supporting a Constitutional amendment. Which, BTW, is never going to happen and Bush must have known it. That was just about pandering to homophobes for votes. There’s a better than even chance it’s going to explode in his face.

But I do think it’s telling which parts of the story each organization chose to emphasize. I’m not sure what it tells us, but I think it’s telling.
