The Sound of the Crowd

Look Left, Look Right

Our pal Mark Evanier recommended reading this Libertarian commentary by someone from the Cato Institute over in his blog.

Mark said he agreed with most of it, and I think I do too. Where I disagree is in some of the things the writer says about the left, in cases when I know there’s more to the story than the examples he gives. Just to take one such, he points out,

“Remember when conservatives thought President Clinton’s dalliance with Monica Lewinsky was a national scandal, and liberals thought conservatives were a bunch of prudes? Then Arnold Schwarzenegger was accused of groping women, and suddenly the liberals wanted to hang him”

Well, the difference there would be that by all accounts Clinton’s “dalliance” with Monica Lewinsky was completely consensual (albeit stupid and lacking in self-control). As opposed to the accusations leveled at Schwarzenegger.

There’s two or three more like that, and I suppose someone who was more to the right than I am could find fault with what he says about their side, too. Nevertheless it’s well worth reading, even if if is another one of those registration-requited sites…
