The Sound of the Crowd

TV Update 3

I caught the first episode of Veronica Mars.

Link in the show title above is to a review of the series that calls it “the smartest teen-oriented drama since “Freaks and Geeks,” which I figure might catch the eye of at least one of you.

I gave it a chance for three reasons, in no particular order:

  1. The producer and creator of the show says he wants it to be to UPN what Buffy the Vampire Slayer was to to the WB. This is a worthy goal; presumably he means a series that is a critical and cult success, will raise the visibility level of the network, and let them build a night around it. As opposed to what Buffy was to UPN: A black hole of cash which didn’t help their schedule in the least.

  1. That producer and creator is Rob Thomas, the man who created and produced my beloved Cupid.

(Link in Rob Thomas’ name is to a short item interviewing Thomas, series star Kiristen Bell & others.)

  1. The commercials made it look good.

For once the commercials weren’t deceptive. “Veronica Mars” is the best: Well-acted, smartly written, layered, witty and it looks like a movie. A recurring role for the always-radiant Corinne Bohrer was just the icing on the cake.

Excellent! I’ll be back for more next Tuesday, which is going to be its regular night. I’ll even give them the benefit of the doubt for the nakedly ratings-jacking guest star shot by Paris Hilton.
