Mr. Gnome
Mr. Gnome
Despite what the band name might conjure up in your mind, Mr. Gnome is a two-person metal band with some aspirations to White Stripes-style success. They feature a loud fuzzy guitar over enthusiastic drum pounding and give the sort of sound that pretty much fills all available bandwidth in whatever audio channel you listen on. Some chords drone on like a stuck bagpiper, others lurch forward like a zombie army on parade maneuvers. Vocalist Nicole Barille has a great voice, although I think she could get more out of it were she singing in a more melodic genre. Of course, she’s doing the guitar at the same time, so clearly she has multitasking skills. In the background we hear partner Sam Meister on drums, but she seems doing most of the work.
Mr. Gnome has both head-banging, guitar-pounding moments, and darker gothic passages. Occasionally I think I’m hearing the guitar from Cheech and Chong’s classic “Earache My Eye,” but generally this group should appeal to a hormone-enraged youth seeking something to rebel against.
