The Wannabe Has Beens
Sometimes I actually check out band websites, and the Wannabe Has Beens site hammers one recurring line – they consider themselves a source of “No-nonsense Rock and Roll.” For some reason, this makes me picture a rack of white underwear at K-mart. While their marketing is light on pizazz, their old school style of rock and roll still sounds fresh as plastic-wrapped BVD’s. The bar band style features decent lyrics, clear vocals and tight arrangements, and you get the sense they are done with Led Zeppelin covers and ready to move out on their own. Whispers of a hit lurk in here, and I’d have no fear of putting these guys as the soundtrack to an angst-ridden love story or coming-of-age film. Inside the CD jackets are impossibly small lyrics that I had trouble reading without my microscope, but no problem, you know what they are singing. All the music listens well, and the song “Hey George Bailey” seems to stick in my mind even thought it’s based on one of the sappiest holiday movies ever made. These guys are solid, reliable, and not so weird that you have to take arty drugs to appreciate them. Maybe they’ll make it big some day, and regret their name.
