Civil Defense League

Somehow Florida has been getting its slack ass back on the musical map. Gainesville has been dominating the punk-rock end of the spectrum with bands like Less Than Jake, Against Me!, and Hot Water Music, while the rest of the state has been leaning to the softer edged emo end (Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Copeland, Anberlin). Now Tallahasse is ready to jump on-board with the arrival of One Small Step For Landmines.

So on what musical turf do One Small Step For Landmines play? Well, their debut album finds a home on Sparta frontman Jim Ward’s label, Civil Defense League. Like Sparta, they ride the small waves left in the wake of indie-rock and that of the young and _emo_tionally driven. Despite this ambiguity, at times this band soars, as they do on “Don’t Go To Hell,” the album’s crowning jewel. “Is There Anybody Out There?” could really explode live, as well. Think R.E.M. meets At the Drive-In.

However, don’t go congratulating these kids just yet. The small handful of promising songs in their repertoire are buried beneath a pile of skip-able tracks (“Everything’s Gonna Be All Right”, “What I’m Down For”). One small step, indeed.
