Straight No Chaser

CD Review – The Cubists

Mechanical Advantage

Semi-Precious Records

The Cubists do a little bit of everything on their debut album. They do their best Pink Floyd on the title track while the ending to “She’s Got Blood” is almost identical to Radiohead’s “National Anthem” with cacophonous horn-blaring taking over. They also take on the singer-songwriter genre with “Best Friends” and even Baroque on “The Orchestra Breathes.” Throughout it all, however, The Cubists keep it sounding vaguely like an early Flaming Lips album with little ambient noises here and there and instruments introduced at unorthodox times. This album is wonderful, especially if you are a fan of any of the groups mentioned, or just like to listen to something that is completely against the mainstream.
