Words with the Detective

Words with the Detective

Written and directed by Larry Stalling

Wallflower Productions

Red Venue, 2010 Orlando International Fringe Festival, Orlando FL</strong>

Word play overcomes detecting in this playful romp thought the alphabet. A series of minor crimes surrounds corrupt cop Al Alexander (Alex Carroll). He’s detected some stolen merchandise from his own house on the table of junk dealer Tilly Timberlake (Kimberly Luffman), and threatens to haul her in. She feigns back and successfully negotiates a date wherein he reveals his real plans – vengeance on his ex-wife. Bumbling crook Bob (Joe Glass) does the dirty work, but there’s a double lurking. Bob is the star of the show, Glass’s extended figure and Gumby like writing is a great sight gag. The romance between Timberlake and Alexander seems stained, but each their own nefarious agenda make this more a business deal than a rose petal-strewn evening.

“Words with the Detective” is an expansion of a recent PRT Launch short play by Stallings. It’s not really about crime fighting and detecting, but a chance to play with words. The five acts all have differing literary devices, and with broad hints in the program, you’ll figure then out quickly. The palindrome act is the most forces, but the final act turns out quite well, and you begin to fall for the story, and not the device. It’s a cute little show.
