Shithouse

directed by Cooper Raiff

starring Cooper Raiff, Dylan Gelula, Amy Landecker

Alex (Cooper Raiff) crossed the USA for an education. He’s homesick and a bit lost and his hard-partying roomie doesn’t help. But a casual fling with Maggie, the dorm RA, when her turtle dies seems to. The pair agonize over the proper last rights for a turtle and whether sex is worth the effort. This might be a modern day Animal House without the humor. Alex gets advice from his childhood toy, a plush dog. Maybe he’s not ready to leave home yet. Or maybe he is. I liked this brittle love affair; there’s little passion in the sex but commitment burns for the lovers. This all makes the turtle appropriate metaphor. Kudos the supporting cast, especially the bouncer at the Basketball House party when he finds out Axel lied to him he chases Alex for miles, hoping to serve a whupping. THAT’S dedication.

This film was presented as part of the 2020 Florida Film Festival.
