Ric Roberts new album Carolina Child is an amazing collection of songs that pique your interest from the first track, and continue to grab your attention all the way through the end of the album. I can’t say that there is a distinct genre as he touches on them all but his North Carolina roots shine through as much as the city of New Orleans and her musicians in the form of subtle influences. It’s jam packed with incredible lyrics, great music, and interesting turns that result in a fantastic album.
“Getting Over Our Love” sonically eases you into the album but pulls your heart right out with the lyrics of lost love. “Harmless Feeling” is a cowrite that started with Oliver Wood of the Wood Brothers and finished by Ric and Carsie Blanton. Ric does an incredible job of writing songs that pull distant memories out of you and hit you right in the feels.
“Sycamore Hill” and “Thinkin’ About You” both showcase some of the effects of the psychedelics that Ric uses as “tools” in his songwriting. With some interesting lyrics and sounds that, at first, may seem out of place in an “Americana” album but the more you listen, the more they fit exactly as they should. Both songs give me the same happy and whimsical feeling I get from a track like “Dang Me” by Roger Miller, or John Prine’s “Spanish Pipe Dream” and I can’t offer much more praise than that.
“My Love Never Sleeps” is my favorite on the album and that’s a tough thing to say with an album this good.
