Jonas Sorgenfrei
Moods
Composer and drummer Jonas Sorgenfrei does more than just convey certain moods on his second album, Moods &mdash he creates an experience that conjures images in the mind. From beginning to end, this is a completely fulfilling LP, packed with top-notch musicianship from Sorgenfrei and the rest of the trio he formed.
“Loose Ends” finds Denis Gäbel at the top of his game. Gäbel’s saxophone delivers a commanding presence that fills the track with color and energy. In addition, “Loose Ends” quickly displays what a tight unit this is. Sorgenfrei’s drums exhibit a dynamism that reels in the ear and refuses to let go. Furthermore, Peter Christof’s powerful bass gives the track added weight.
The lighter tone of “Coffee Bean Dance” is incredibly appealing. Gäbel focuses on the silky textures of his saxophone. Similarly, Christof aims for a relaxing tone on his bass while Sorgenfrei explores more subtle touches with his drums.
“Ms Nicholson” seems to evoke a sense of romance with its lush, sultry sax. This is the perfect evening date soundtrack. Images of lit candles underneath the moon fill the air. Robust drumming and spellbinding bass complete the picture, and it’s gorgeous.
