Ink 19 Premieres Speedfossil’s “IRL” from Room with a Vu

Today, Boston band Speedfossil releases “irl,” the third single from their EP, Room With A VU, Vol.1, coming out April 12, 2024, on Sonic Escort.

I close my eyes and we talk almost every night / When I wake up I’m all alone and she’s nowhere in sight.

Produced and directed by Harry McCoy, the video was shot at various locations in and around New England. “irl” features performance footage from Speedfossil, as well as vignettes and images of lead singer/songwriter Garret Vandermolen interacting with model Tyla Jordan, both “in real life” and in the fantasy AI world of the internet, his own mind, and old photographs. Beautifully filmed and edited, “irl” follows “Sweetheart,” which debuted at #1 on the Radio Indie Alliance Top 75 Chart, and is already making several critics “single of the year” lists. Garret talks about the new song and video:

Harry McCoy really came up with a great concept for this video, and immediately ‘got’ the idea of the lyrics. The song (like a lot of Speedfossil songs), delves into finding a way to communicate with your significant other. Life doesn’t happen on a Facebook post, on the internet, in a fantasy world, or in a photo album, it happens in the here and now, and we need to cherish and nurture the relationships we have in person, ‘in real life.’ I think the video does a great job of capturing that dichotomy, and I’m super psyched for people to see and hear the new song from the EP!

Room With A VU, Vol. 1 is the first of three EPs that will feature songs recorded in the same studio with the same engineer/producer. The concept has the band working quickly to put new songs together all in a short period in one specific studio. Vol. 2 is slated for sometime in fall 2024, and the complete sessions, Vol 1 and Vol. 2 towillbe released on a vinyl LP in late 2024.

Video production and engineering is by David Minehan (The Neighborhoods, The Replacements, Dink Pinkerman.) Garret Vandermolen also plays bass in the legendary Boston band The Plimsouls, who will be on the road this summer as part of the Totally Tubular Tour.
