Blue Eyes

Blue Eyes

The descending guitar chords by Michael Rizzo on opener “In Your Arms” works like laudanum, weakening the knees but directing focus. The scale is streamlined and clean, and David Minshew sings “In you arms/ where I thought I’d play along with anything.” Recorded and mixed, this Blue Eyes presentation furrows the brow as they do live, offering warmth and detachment as equals. Their energy seems directed to explaining, justifying, criticizing and slapping motivation, pure and crooked. Melena Grimes’ cello stretches across “Under the Sun” as foundation to Minshew’s surprise-ending whore murder story. The unlikeable protagonist of “My Bastard” disappears into the squawking saxophone and unerring picking of Rizzo. Performances with Lydia Lunch and Low make sense, but on this three-song release, Blue Eyes establish independence in anticipation of their forthcoming full-length record.
