Danger to Dream

Kandle Music Inc.

Celebrated singer-songwriter Kandle holds the impressive distinction of owning two of 2024’s most alluring records: the self-titled debut EP from her alt. country combo, The Midnight Cowgirls, and her latest soft-pop solo LP, Danger to Dream, a hypnotic hybrid that finds the Canadian artist carrying her creative ball another 20-30 yards downfield.

Along with her songwriting and production partner, singer and musician Jeff Mitchell, Kandle succeeds in delivering a dark yet delicate, dreamy delight — an irresistible sonic seduction, to be sure. The record’s press release points to Kandle’s “moonlit melodies.” I really wish I’d written that one, ‘cuz it’s a perfect description.

The intoxicating 12-track collection dances lightly all about the byway, yet, somehow remains in its designated lane. A dysfunctional-feeling romantic duet with Mitchell, “Never Gonna Love You” and the rather ominous “Burn” both reflect the record’s overall electro vibe, while “St. Paul’s” can be a bit more rebellious.

“Seen It Before” and “Live A Lie” not only know my zip code, they have my actual home address and they both possess the ability to put me in a beautifully peaceful trance. However, especially when pinned to its captivating video, the title track might serve as the record’s most appealing Tinder profile pic.
