Helium

The Magic City

Matador

In this world of pre-packaged bands with a stylized look and even more stylized sound, with silicone-enhanced lead singers and banal melodies and insipid lyrics, it’s always nice to know there are bands like Helium around. The Boston trio’s new record, The Magic City, is a joy to listen to. At times it challenges your ears and your mind, but remains accessible and intriguing. Lead woman Mary Timony’s vocals and guitars have seldom sounded as good. Her lyrics, perhaps a bit less overtly political than some of her past work, still pack a wallop. Even though they have a loyal following, Helium still doesn’t get near the recognition they deserve as one of the most consistently intriguing and intelligent bands.
