I still can’t understand how neurotic waifs can pretend stereotypical “female mystique,” humorlessness, and sensitivity beyond their scant years, put it on top of the most blandly-arranged folk, and sell millions of records in the process… while Danielle Howle puts out brilliant albums in near-obscurity. Not to make this a chick-rock issue, but as long as we’re going to be picking token female presences on the charts, we might as well make it ones with talent.
Danielle Howle’s voice is not as Southern-sounding when she sings as when she talks, but a love for gently rounded vowels and easy pacing lend it a regional character. Meanwhile, her songs are brilliant pop gems, full of worthy chordal hooks and slyly wise lyrics. A smile, whether wry or open, never seems to leave her voice. Do a Two Sable has material more reminiscent of her work with Lay Quiet Awhile than recent acoustic solo efforts, but her style remains as consistently charming as ever.
