I Muvrini

A Bercy

Mondo Melodia/Ark21

World music is suddenly, inexplicably becoming the latest “in” thing. Are we suddenly developing a more sophisticated musical taste? Hardly. Whatever the reason, however, our minds cannot help but improve with the experience.

I Muvrini is from Corsica. For those of you who are geographically depraved, er, deprived, accept that this French island is north of Sardinia off the coast of Italy. The native music is an intriguing blend of Mediterranean and Arabic, featuring bagpipes, hurdy gurdies, and various string instruments. The lyrics are French, but the accent is odd to our ears.

There is a certain sound to the music that we would be tempted to label as Celtic, but the Arab-sounding chants dispel any Emerald Isle thoughts quickly enough. This CD is a must for any world music fans, if I may use that over-worked term once again. Ark 21, 14724 Ventura Blvd, Penthouse Suite, Sherman Oaks CA 91403.
