Richard Bone

Electropica

Quirkworks

Are you ready for this concept? Electropica is electronic interpretations of bossa nova and lounge music, all performed electronically. What this disc proves to me is that Lounge Music as it has come to be known isn’t dying after all, it is just mutating. A whole crop of mod hipsters have surfaced in the past few years to keep this genre alive, including Tipsy, Dimitri From Paris, Combustible Edison, United Future Organization, Saint Etienne, and now Richard Bone. Bone has proved to these ears that not only can he compete with the likes of Moog Cookbook for kitsch value, but his music can also sound not nearly as tired upon re-listening. Light bossa nova electronics, a little ambient, a little jazzy – very cool. The CD is dedicated to the “Music of the Bossa Nova Masters: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, and Joao Gilberto” and keeps a slow, head-swaying, finger-popping gate throughout, just as most Bossa Nova records worth there salt also do. I smell a wonderful crossover hit on this CD, titled “Ipanema 2000,” which updates this easy listening favorite for the here-and-now by sampling lightly from the original while giving it a funky new step. Perfect for the modern jet-set on those evenings when a snifter of brandy, some ladyfingers, a few good friends and light dancing are on everyone’s agenda. *snap* *snap* *snap* *snap* *snap* *snap* *snap* *snap* *snap* Quirkworks Laboratory Discs, P.O.
