Connells
Still Life

To stretch one’s musical legs and not lose sight of one’s niche is tricky business indeed, but these guys have been doing it for years. In fact, the Connells have turned static evolution into an artform.
This latest effort is exquisite. It is not as straightforward as, say, Ring, but it is nonetheless unmistakably Connells music. There is a bit more of a southern-fried feel to the songs, reminiscent of early Black Crowes. The guitar leads are especially tilted toward a Skynyrd-like quality. The vocals are vintage Connells, but Doug MacMillan’s pipes sound smoother and more mature. Dave Connell stills works his bass with the agility of an Olympic gymnast. Peele Wimberley keeps the beat steady and stimulating.
This album will definitely please devotees and perhaps even garner some new fans as well. TVT Records, 23 East 4th St, New York NY 10003
