Glen or Glenda

Reasons in the Sun

Shimmy Disc

This is one of the more difficult albums to review. You see, I am a big Bongwater fan, and to review Kramer doing music with a female singer other than Ann Magnuson would end up being biased. And to a certain extent, it is. Let me start by saying that Tammy Lang is a good vocalist /lyricist and the album is also very consistent to the Shimmy Disc sound. Kramer continues to impress with his plethora of sound samples, ranging from the obscure to the Beatles.

Borrowing their band name from an Ed Wood movie, the format for most of the album is late 50’s early 60’s bubblegum rock which is exemplified by their covers of The Searcher’s “Needle’s and Pins,” and Tommy Roe’s “Dizzy.” Their originals follow along that line with “I Love you Anyway,” and “My Bubblegum is Pink. “ After laying low for a while, it is truly enjoyable to hear new music coming from Shimmy. This may not be Kramer’s best effort, but I believe with some time, Glen or Glenda could fill the void fell by Bongwater. Shimmy Disc, 71 Leonard St., New York, NY 10113
