I spent a great few days with my relatives in Atlanta last month. Sailing on Lake Linear, lunch, shopping and a visit to Six Flags made for a wonderful trip (well, all except for a wild rollercoaster ride that practically gave my cousin Carly and I concussions. For a second there I thought I was going to die. Made me wish I had listened to my mother about wearing clean underwear. Or any at all.) And we won’t go into how Puma, my cousin’s cat, mistook my just-packed suitcase for her litter box. Actually, make that my mom’s suitcase.
While in Georgia, I also caught Another Man Down at McDuff’s. They did a great acoustic set of songs from their new CD and a ripping version of “Jenny Jenny.” (Thanks, Alan). On my way to the ladies’ room, I ran into Andrew Shives, bass player for Cool For August, and super nice guy. Between pool shots, Andrew told me the band is going into the studio to record their new CD. “We are doing all new stuff, very different from the first album,” he said. Due to bad timing, I was leaving the night of the Matchbox 20 show, however, upon my return, I learned that Matchbox 20 would be playing on Saturday, October 3rd at Coral Sky Amphitheater with Paula Cole. Can’t wait.
So I’m at the Smashing Pumpkins show at Sunrise Musical Theatre, and I’m wondering what is up with bass player D’arcy. She seemed so not into the whole thing. She never once cracked a smile, not even when the Sunrise City Commission made an official proclamation dubbing August 8, 1998 as “Smashing Pumpkins Day.” (Although I have to admit, she did look great. Loved her see-through black shirt.) The band did sound great, though, playing songs from their latest release Adore and Mellon Collie, changing things around to sound more like what they are doing now. Nothing from Gish and nothing from Siamese Dream. It was a wonderful thing they did; donating the $114,570 raised from ticket sales to West Palm Beach’s Center for Children in Crisis.
My friend Kelli and I attended the American Cancer Society’s Creative Black Tie at the DCOTA Design Center. The theme was to come as your favorite celebrity, and I, in my suit, shortest skirt, and silver Haliburton briefcase, went as Ally McBeal. Kelli was the dancing baby, complete with diaper and spear. We met a lot of nice people, and it was a great party. I just wish the ACS did not conduct research on animals.
Miami Stuff
Had a great time at the private reception for Circus at Bash. As usual, the crowd was as stunning as the surroundings. Are there any ugly people in Miami? And speaking of stunning, Chaos was jumping the night of Ocean Drive Magazine’s summer wrap-up party featuring supermodel Niki Taylor. (How did her legs get that long?) I must be getting older; two weekends on the beach and I need a nap.
If you live in Aventura, or even if you live in Fort Lauderdale, you are going to want to make a point to see a movie at the AMC Aventura 24 Theatres. I don’t usually get so excited about a movie theatre, but this place is the exception. The theatre, located at Biscayne Blvd. and 197th Street, threw a fabulous opening night party, and all attendees were able to watch movies for free! The rock and recline seats are so comfortable and all of the employees were super friendly. Do a little shopping at the mall, have some lunch, and then go see a movie. What could be better?
Local
I received a message from a DJ at FM 90.9, the Underground. He told me they recently got raided by the FCC, and they took all of their equipment. They put together a concert called the Underground Fest at the Button South to try and regroup financially. Local bands performing included Load, Nonpoint, the Groovenics, Cleaner, Wrench, Crease, Dare to Dream, Vesper Sparrow, Sick Sense, and others. That was the week I was down south, and missed the show, but good luck Underground.

Vonda Shepard will be at Pompano Beach Amphitheater on September 4th at 8pm. Wednesday, September 9th, the Allman Brothers Band, with Sister Hazel opening, at Coral Sky Amphitheater.www.coralsky.com. Cinderella, Wednesday, September 9th, at the Button South in Hallandale. September 11th, Janet Jackson with Usher. B.B. King and Johnny Lang play Pompano Beach Amphitheater on September 19th. And, as if you did not know by now, Pearl Jam September 22nd and 23rd at Coral Sky Amphitheater. Both shows are sold out.
Change of Date
The Wild Ones party planned for Wednesday, September 30th, has been changed to Thursday, October 1st, at the Escape in Fort Lauderdale (300 SW 1st Avenue). A Word of Advice
To anyone who works on a computer all day (who doesn’t?), make sure that your monitor is at eye level. Mine wasn’t, and my neck decided to revolt against me. I’m much better now, thanks, due to my wonderful chiropractor, Dr. Cambas. Eddie and I went to high school together, and we ran into each other in the water aisle at Publix, the very day my neck quit. If you are in Pembroke Pines, give him a call at (954) 433-4773.
