What a great idea it is to elevate heavy metal to the higher cultural plane of chamber music. It’s been attempted many times, usually by the force of ferocious guitars, but never, to my recollection, by the brooding elegance of the cello. Four cellos, to be precise. And four lads, from the lands of the midnight sun, sawing out some ambitious covers of beloved Metallica anthems. Most of this is successfully accomplished. The beauty of haunting ballads such as “Nothing Else Matters” and “One” greatly outweigh the menacing yet disappointing beasts which are only that way due to the cello lacking the texture produced by an amp and its six-stringed cousin once removed. Consider this an interesting and worthy component of any eclectic collection. Mercury Records, 825 Eighth Avenue, Eigth Floor, New York, NY 10019
