Borut Krzisnik
Currents of Time
Tone Casualties
Krzisnik’s music is probably best listened to at times when you are falling in and out of consciousness. His compositions are tone poems that evoke a strange world that wavers between daydream and nightmare. Some may know Krzisnik as the guitarist in Laibach, but with the music on this release, he establishes a unique identity apart from that group.
“101 Merry Metronomes” starts the album off with layers of quirky rhythms, off-kilter guitar lines, and bizarre “found” noises that all come together like a soundtrack to a surreal film about wind-up toys. Another track, “The Play of Puppets” sounds like industrial music produced in a dream factory, with its combination of metallic guitar riffs, jumbled-up samples from European radio stations, and an unexpected turn into polka territory.
Other works that come to mind when listening to Currents of Time are Ravi Shankar’s soundtrack for the movie Charly, John Zorn’s reworkings of Ennio Morricone’s film music, and the more disturbing elements on the A Clockwork Orange soundtrack. Although short of being a masterpiece, this is one of the more consistently engaging works of experimental music that I’ve come across in a while. Tone Casualties, 1258 N.
