The Creatures

Anima Animus

Does anybody else out there miss Siouxsie and the Banshees? Come on, admit it. You miss the older stuff, from the eighties all the way up until about Peepshow . Okay, maybe some of you don’t. As for the rest of us; fans of Siouxsie Sioux take heed. This new disc is a nice surprise for both Creature fans and Banshee lovers. The Creatures, Sioux’s long-running percussion-based side project with Banshees drummer Budgie, have once again surfaced. Anima Animus comes out right on the heels of a best of disc ( A Bestiary ), which showcased the unique drum and vocal sound of the duo.

The new disc, however, eases up on the strict percussion and delves into some new musical realms, including other instruments and electronics. Don’t worry, the bongos, timpani, and xylophones are still there, but they are given equal time with some other sounds. “Take Mine” is straight up old school Creatures. “Exterminating Angel” is pure, pulsing electronics and “Don’t Go To Sleep Without Me” is sublimely haunting. The rest of the tracks lie somewhere in between.

This is great release that should appeal to all Siouxsie fans as well as newcomers to the Sioux nation.
