The Process Of…
Forget all you’ve heard about the “Earth Crisis” sound in hardcore. Turmoil is what the future should sound like. Their latest, The Process of…, perfectly envisions the coming millennium: frantic, unstable, cold and harsh. Their sound is totally original, taking as much from hardcore as from death metal and still keeping it sounding no more like one than the other. The music is chaotic, filled with furious chording that strays from just your typical 5ths backed by an incredible rhythm section that makes you feel as if Armageddon is coming out of your speakers. Vocalist John Gula’s throat is an asset that this band probably won’t last forever, seeing as how his Obituary influenced screams tear through everything to give an introspective look at life. This is definitely Turmoil’s best release yet, sounding less glossed than their Johann DeLucabut taking on more different time signatures than before, with some more classic hardcore beats, downright doomy songs (“Impending Doom Theory,” aptly titled) and some seemingly southern rock sounding riffs, all while still being able to tear your damn head off before you even have a chance to blink. The Process of… is beyond incredible, beyond boundaries and leaps and bounds beyond any hardcore release you’ll ever hear this year, or even ever.
