Engine Down

Under the Pretense of Present Tense

Lovitt

Taut guitar outbursts and hardcore energy is tempered by moments of fluid songcraft and innovation, belying a more mature approach than just scratch and attack. Quiet strums and sung vocals are used equally amongst the screams and frantic guitars, ignoring the cliché’ quiet/loud dynamic in favor of patient building, surging and breaking out as need be. Nice textures are further added by way of cello and vibraphone.

I had heard a lot of great things about this band and had expected a lot of great things knowing there were ex-Sleepytime Trio people involved, but truthfully I had no idea they were this amazing. Fucking brilliant. Really.
