The Secret Underworld of Alternative Nuggets

Beggars Banquet

If there’s a notoriously underappreciated label, it’s Beggars Banquet. Blessed with impeccable taste in music, this label has brought to Stateside release acts like Bauhaus offshoot Tones on Tail, Thee Hypnotics and Rollerskate Skinny. They’ve also provided outlets for notoriously uncommercial acts like Loop, Darkside, and Mercury Rev offshoot Shady. The range of sounds here is bound by a common bond of having heavy guitars draped over everything like maroon velvet. Some personal favorites are collected here for my convenience: Radial Spangle’s “Birthday,” Darkside’s “Guitar Voodoo” and Shady’s “Sugar Sugar Sugar.” This compilation makes no bones about trying to be a Nuggets of the Nineties, and I’ll be darned if it doesn’t do a good job of it.
