The Sophtware Slump

V2 Records

Sophtware Slump is a peculiar record that is hard to pin down. Given the album’s title and the liner photography featuring smashed up keyboards in the dirt, I expected some kind of angry, geeky electronic noise. I was pleasantly surprised to hear some great synth-rock accompanied by fuzzy guitars and a very Neil Young-ish lead singer. Taking lessons from Pink Floyd, Grandaddy sing, in part, about technology, and go so far as to use ticking clocks on the recording. Where they differ from Pink Floyd are on the harder, guitar-driven songs like “Chartsengrafs” and “Broken Household Appliance National Forest.” Proving they are capable of being sensitive, “Underneath the Weeping Willow” is an introspective song about going to sleep and waking up happy. All the various themes aside, this is an adventure in listening that probably won’t let you down.
