The Supersuckers
with Los Infernos and Furious Four

“Get there early,” I kept telling myself, as I knew this event would be huge. What with the Supersuckers in town to support Taylor Steele’s latest surf video, Loose Change, the scene would surely be chaos. What I found was almost inconceivable – fifty to sixty fans milling about with no more in sight! What I also found was exposure to a great band who also appears on Loose Change: Los Infernos.
Before I move on, Furious Four opened the show and, unfortunately, I missed them. I have heard good things about the band, so check ‘em out.
Los Infernos provided an explosive and energetic opening to the evening. These guys were like Rev. Horton Heat on steroids! The Infernos’ powerful vocals and heavy, guitar-driven, raucous action made an impression on the few who heard them. The Southern California group is touring in support of their new album on Alternative Tentacles. They also pulled a few tunes from their debut record Planet Chaos (Spin Records). The band seemed undeterred by the lack of attendance and gave us a great show. Be advised – Los Infernos is a band to watch.
The time was at hand: The Supersuckers hit the stage with the fervor of a sold-out stadium gig. Having surveyed the situation, guitarist/vocalist Eddie Spaghetti decided it was time for the ‘Suckers to have a little fun. Tonight was going to be mostly cover tunes, Supersucker-style.
Having seen the group only a few months prior in support of their new album, The Evil Powers of Rock & Roll, the playlist usually includes a couple covers, including AC/DC. Tonight was no exception, but we were also treated to Merle Haggard, Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak,” and their classic cover “Dead Homeiz,” to name a few. They did try and get back to a couple of other songs, like the title track to the new record and another standard, “Jackalope Eye,” but what I can’t relate to you was the laid-back, “let’s do what the hell we feel like” approach that’s not an option at most shows. Here is a true bar band who rocks like a motherfucker, just doing what comes naturally. I can only hope they had as much fun as I did. The Supersuckers are one of the best live acts who are still strong after a decade. It just goes to show, rock ‘n’ roll will never die.
Beware, Brevard County: When top acts like this come to your backyard, get off your ass and support them! The scene is slow enough as it is. Promoters bring bands in to give exposure and sell tickets. No tickets = no more bands come = no fun = drive to Orlando… ◼
