Monkey Vs. Robot

by James Kochalka

Top Shelf

James Kochalka Superstar unleashed Monkey Vs. Robot, the album, upon unsuspecting ears in 1996-97, and without a doubt it was one of the funniest records I’d heard in years. This is a graphic novel based on the title song (or vice versa?) of that album, an epic tale of the constant struggle between cute little jungle monkeys and tinny cylindrical envoys of technology. You can add all manner of Freudian, Jungian, or what-have-you meaning to the tale, but in no way does that detract from the sheer enjoyment of watching events unfold from James Kochalka’s wonderfully expressive drawings and impeccable sense of timing. Highly recommended, along with any other books/records by Kochalka.
