Kindercore

In scant years and forty-nine releases, Kindercore has built a reputation it takes other labels hundreds of records to achieve, if ever. The Athens-based Kindercore is nearly synonymous with a particular pop sound, encompassing elements of lysergic imagery, bubblegum pop, and epic proportions. The Apples In Stereo, the Olivia Tremor Control, and Of Montreal are some of the loftier names on here, but they’re equal to lesser-known acts like I Am The World Trade Center and Kincaid.

The three-disc set is grouped in The New, The Classics and The Remixes. Pretty self-explanatory. It’s clear that this is an evolving sound, and Kindercore has its finger right on the pulse. I’d be hard-pressed to pick representative tracks for the whole thing, but I’ll gladly share my favorites. On the classic side there’s Vetran’s “Sun Sneeze.” Modern times give us the faux-retro (how modern!) sly winking of Tuesday Weld’s “I Like It That Way.” And finally, the World Trade Remix of Of Montreal’s “You Are An Airplane” is definitely not just off kilter, it’s off off kilter.

Explore Kindercore Fifty; you’re guaranteed to find at least one shimmering example of your favorite pop sound.
