Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Soundtrack

Sony

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a big budget martial arts movie from director Ang Lee (The Ice Storm). It’;s being hailed as a revolutionary movie although it’;s a celebration of Hong Kong post-new wave cinema that had its start over a decade ago with filmmakers like Tsui Hark, Wong Jing, and Ching Siu-Tung. Regardless of the scores of similar films, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the first to get any major attention in the States. Where the new wave of cinema from Hong Kong shattered the “you killed my master” or Bruce Lee stereotypes, the soundtrack is not going to remind one of the music in a bad Chinese restaurant. The lush score written by Tan Dun is not typically Chinese, yet contains some Asian motifs, and is punctuated by cello solos from Yo-Yo Ma and a title song sung by pop star CoCo Lee.
