Shawn Mullins

Beneath the Velvet Sun

Columbia

With a shorter haircut and more stylish clothes, the Top 40 folk singer of last year is back. Donning new lyrics to the same basic songs, his new CD isn’t amazing (nor was his last, really), but after you listen to it long enough, it grows on you a little. There are a few sleeper hits on the disc, among them: “Lonesome, I Know You Too Well,” “Yellow Dog Song,” and “North on 95.” While the majority of the songs are very borderline country, you’ll notice that’s it’s more the music that’s down home, because the lyrics are very original and very Shawn Mullins. Surprise, surprise, he writes them himself !
