Ekova
Space Lullabies and Other Fantasmagore
Six Degrees
Beautiful. Intoxicating. Ekova is the sirens’ music to sailors. From the moment I trapped my ears within the confines of headphones, I felt as though I had set sail into those ancient waters where folklore, myths, and fantasy control my destiny. That’s what music is supposed to do. It should transport you to a world that you’ve never experienced. I think this is why I love any and every artist on Six Degrees. Ekova has long been one of my favorites, and with Space Lullabies and Other Fantasmagore, I can’t stop listening. The album kicks off with “Steel Bird,” an enchanting mixture of African instrumentation, steel drums, and a cascade of percussion. By the time “Siip Siie” fades out, I usually begin to wonder where I am. Pulsing through my veins I just want to be surrounded by like-minded individuals, covered in mud, all playing drums while a fire burns to the gods above. Ekova’s music is emotion. If, in recording Space Lullabies, any limitations were placed upon them, not one of them shows. My only real regret is that it’s only one CD. None the less, every minute is worth hearing for hours. I’d have to say Space Lullabies will end up as one of my favorite release for the year. Pretty daring considering Ekova could release an album of remixes before the end of the year. You just don’t hear music this powerful released everyday.
